Werdegang
Jahrgang 1940 ist seit 1987 Professor für Missionswissenschaft und ökumenische Beziehungen
der Kirchen am Fachbereich Ev. Theologie in Hamburg. Nach Studium der Ev. Theologie Gemeindevikariat und
Ordination 1969 in Lübeck, Dr. theol. 1969. Mitglied der Studienleitung der Missionsakademie Hamburg 1969-1971.
Pastorale Tätigkeit und Feldforschung in Papua Neuguinea 1971-1978, Mitbegründer eines Instituts für
kontextuelle Theologie ("The Melanesian Institute for Pastoral and Socio-Economic Service"), seit 1978
Referent für Grundsatzfragen und Beziehungen der Nordelbischen Ev.-Luth. Kirche nach Ostasien/Ozeanien im
Zentrum für Weltmission und kirchlichen Weltdienst Hamburg, Studienreisen, Lehrtätigkeiten und
Forschungsaufenthalte in Ozeanien, China, Indien, Korea, Brasilien, Kamerun.
Hauptarbeitsgebiete: Kontextualisierungsproblematik; Theologie der Mission, Religion und Gewalt, Kultur-
und Christentumsgeschichte Ozeaniens.

Born in India in 1940, theological studies in Heidelberg, Tübingen, Goettingen and Kiel, ordained a pastor
in the Lutheran Church in 1969. Doctoral dissertation on christological discussions in the ecumenical movement
(University of Hamburg 1969), secretary for ecumenical studies at Mission Academy at the University of
Hamburg for two years, pastoral work and field work in Papua New Guinea 1971-1978, particularly with the
Melanesian Institute for Pastoral and Socio-Economic Service. Ten years as area secretary relating to the
Far East and Melanesia for the Northelbian Lutheran Church, since 1987 professor of Missiology and Ecumenics
at the University of Hamburg and Chair of the Board of the Mission Academy at the University of Hamburg.
Publications mainly in the field of interactions between Christianity and cultures, history and theology
of Christianity in Oceania, missiology, religion and violence and other current ecumenical concerns.
Visiting Professor at UPNG (Papua New Guinea), Hanshin University Korea, Nanjing Theological Seminary,
People's Republic of China, Gurukul Theological Seminary and Research Institute, India.
